The Value of Video

I can't tell you how many times I work with a couple who has decided that they aren't interested in booking a videographer in addition to their photographer. Perhaps it is because their view of a "videographer" is that of the A/V guy lugging a large camera, equipped with both a large microphone and a bright spotlight? Or maybe because they think that a photographer will capture their day just as well as a team consisting of both a photographer and videographer. Nothing could be further from reality...for starters cameras are  wwwaaaayyy smaller now. (: Furthermore, videographers  today are cinematographers, and most importantly, it is a wedding film--not video.

Where photo and video are relatives, they are not one in the same. One cannot, well, should not, be employed in lieu of the other. My belief is that you should always elect both forms of documentation for your wedding day. Think about what it means to forgo either. Without photos, we miss out on the snapshot images of the beauty and celebration for display in frames and albums which tell part of the story of your wedding day on the walls of our homes and offices. Leaving one with a memory left in a DVR case which doesn't evoke much emotion or memory when put on display. Without video, we have only the snapshot images which are displayed as a stand alone memory or in an album where a selection of photos attempts to illustrate all the details and effort that went into your wedding day. These snapshots cannot really tell the whole story. Therefore, I don't want any couple to ever chose between having one or the other.

Certainly budget is often a concern when it comes to deciding to hire a photographer and/or videographer. It is possible to have both and still remain in your budget. Determine which coverage is most important and allot a larger portion of the budget to that vendor--allowing a budget for both. I would much rather see a client hire a less expensive videographer than none at all.

Once you realize you can afford to capture the movement and sound of your wedding in addition to the photography, you will want to find a great vendor to work with. Vimeo is a great place to view videos of cinematographers wedding work. Like the one below. Paperback Weddings illustrates exactly why video is so important. Aside from the sheer beauty of the film, it captures so much emotion (especially during the gift exchange), which photo just cannot. Enjoy!
